DIARY NOTES

Governors’ Forum meeting with Parents
Tuesday 2nd May at 7.00pm

All parents are invited to attend an evening meeting with members of our Governing Body on Tuesday 2nd May at 7.00pm.   This is an opportunity for parents to meet our governors and to hear feedback from the school about the comments and ideas parents shared via the questionnaire which was sent out last July and how this has informed our plans for improvement and change.  There will be an opportunity to raise general issues and questions and to share ideas for school development.

This is an opportunity to contribute to school development alongside other parents, members of the school leadership team and governors, if you wish to do so.   Please look out for the letter which will be sent home this week, and complete and return the reply slip if you wish to attend the meeting.

Mayoral Elections (Thursday 4th May)

Please note that the school is being used as a polling station for the mayoral elections on Thursday 4th May.  The school will be open to pupils as normal.  Voting will take place in our Morning/After-School Club room with access for voters via the pedestrian gate and the room’s emergency exit.  On this day, both Morning Club and After-School Club will be based in the school hall.  Parents are asked to drop off and collect children from the main entrance on this day and to avoid parking on Bazley Road to make way for local voters who may find it difficult to park their cars elsewhere and walk the distance to the school polling station.  Thank you for your co-operation.

Click here for a booklet about the eight candidates for the Mayoral elections in Greater Manchester.

The school will also be used as a polling station for the recently-announced GENERAL ELECTION which will take place on Thursday 8th June.  The same arrangements for wrap-around care will apply on that day.

SCHOOL MEALS

School meals Menus are Changing

The menus for school meals are changing the week beginning Monday 1st May.  Manchester Fayre, our school meals provider, is changing the choices available to children and introducing a 3-week rather than a 4-week menu cycle.  This is aimed at offering children a wider variety of food, whilst at the same time reducing the number of days on which pasta, sandwiches and baked potatoes are available to encourage children to have a wider variety of foods at lunchtime rather than relying (as some children do) on pasta or sandwich choices every day.  The new menus, which start on Monday 1st May, can be found on our website.

E-NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the first edition of our E-Newsletter.  Via this e-newsletter, we aim to share with you regular news, updates, information and reports about school events, including upcoming events in the school diary and news from individual classes.  We are hoping to send an e-newsletter (even if it’s a short one) to you on a weekly basis for the week ahead.  We will also send information for specific classes by email – this might include reminders about trips, special events or projects.  This will hopefully provide everyone with more ongoing information about what is happening in school.  It will also enable us to provide school and other useful website links for your reference and further reading.

We would be grateful if you would take the time to read the newsletters so that you have the latest information about school events and so that you do not feel that you have to call the school office for information.  Information about subscribing and unsubscribing to this e-newsletter can be found at the foot of the newsletter.

DIARY NOTES

Class Photographs (Thursday 27th April)

Please ensure that your child is dressed in the correct school uniform for class photographs on Thursday.  How your child is dressed very much determines their position in the photograph and the balance and quality of the overall class photograph.  Thank you.

Meeting 27th April at 7.00pm at School (Upstairs meeting room)

The next meeting of the ‘Friends’ will take place at school this coming Thursday, 27th April, at 7.00pm.  The main purpose of this meeting is to discuss the planning and preparation for the Summer Fair which takes place on Saturday 24th June (12noon – 3.00pm).  We need lots of parent helpers to make the fair a success so if you can help in any way (setting up in the morning, clearing away after the event or running a stall for all or part of the afternoon), please come along to the meeting to share your ideas and support or, alternatively, contact Rachel Binnie, Chair of the Friends, on 07713 644758.

PACKED LUNCHES

For those parents providing children with a packed lunch, we remind you that it should be a healthy packed lunch.  The NHS Healthy Lunch Boxes page suggests that a packed lunch should contain:

  • starchy carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, rice, pasta)
  • fresh fruits and vegetables/salad
  • a source of protein (beans pulses, eggs, fish, meat, cheese or diary alternative)
  • low-fat and lower-sugar desserts or yoghurt, tea cake, fruit bread, plain rice/corn cakes, sugar-free jelly
  • sugar-free or no-added-sugar drink (water is provided by school)
The following websites give good advice about the content of healthy lunch boxes:
Advice suggests that the following items should be avoided, provided only on occasions or not be provided at all in children’s packed lunches:
  • any item containing nuts (the school is nut-free zone)
  • takeaways or leftovers, e.g. McDonald’s
  • confectionery items such as chocolate items, chocolate-covered biscuits, sweets
  • crisps (high in fact and salt) on a daily basis
  • cakes, pastries (high in fat) on a daily basis
  • sausage rolls and items such as ‘Peperami’ (44% fat, 17% saturated fat, high in salt)
  • sugary desserts, e.g. sugared doughnuts
  • items high in fat, particularly saturated fat
  • items high in salt
  • sugary drinks
More information is available on our website.

HALL ART WORK

Some new art work, produced by our current Year 5 class, is now on display in the school hall.  You will need to look up high to see it – 20 ‘pop art’ pictures with words (honesty, love, patience, democracy, peace, respect, etc) reflecting both British and school values have been mounted on the brick work between the windows.  Well done and thank you to Year 5 and Mrs McAffer for producing this very colourful and meaningful art work.

VISIT TO THE LOWRY THEATRE

Children in Key Stage 2 enjoyed their visit to the Lowry Theatre on Wednesday of last week to see a production of Micheal Morpurgo’s Running Wild.  Thank you to parents for making this theatre visit possible via your voluntary and extra financial contributions.  Without your contributions, we could not offer the children as many visits as we do to widen and develop their interests and learning, particularly events such as this.  Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children will be visiting the theatre in July (Thursday 6th July) to see Road Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox.

COMIC RELIEF

Thank you to everyone who supported RED NOSE DAY on the last day of last term.  We raised £238 for the charity, Comic Relief.  Well done – the children all looked great in their red and silly clothes – thanks for your efforts in providing costumes, and in some cases, make up!

LISA BEATTIE – CHARITY MARATHON RUN

And finally … we would like to congratulate our Chair of Governors and parent of the school, Lisa Beattie, on her completion of the London Marathon on Sunday.  In doing so, Lisa has raised £550 for the school’s chosen charity, Destination Florida.  Thank you to everyone who has supported Lisa and donated to this worthy cause on this occasion.  It is not too late to donate to the charity in recognition of Lisa’s achievement via her Just Giving page …
