Year 3 – Mathematics
In Year 3, pupils are introduced to the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for Mathematics. This includes a greater understanding of place value and the number system, and measurement, statistics and shape. In summary, pupils will be taught to:
- recognise the place value of each digit in a 3-digit numbers
- compare and order numbers up to 1000
- read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals and in words
- solve number problem and practical problems
- add and subtract numbers mentally, e.g. a 3-digit number and hundreds
- add and subtract number with up to 3-digits using formal written methods (columnar)
- estimate answers to calculations and use the inverse to check
- recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3,4 and 8 multiplication tables
- count up and down in tenths
- recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects
- recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators
- measure, compare, add and subtract lengths, mass and volume/capacity
- measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes
- add and subtract amounts of money to give change
- tell and write the time from an analogue clock
- estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute
- draw 2-D and make 3-D shapes
- identify right angles and angles which are more than or less than a right angle
- identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines
- interpret and present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables
Of importance in Year 3 is …
- learning number bonds
- learning multiplication and division facts
- telling the time to the nearest minute
- understanding fractions as a part of a whole
