Year 1 Curriculum, Year Group Expectations and Learning Resources

Year 1 Phonics and the Phonics Screening Test

  • The children will have a short phonics lesson every morning starting at 9.00am.  We follow the ‘Letters and Sounds‘ programme published by the Government
  • You can find out more about the Phases for Letters and Sounds here.
  • A phonics revision booklet will be sent home to parents shortly after Christmas.  This will include examples of most of the words that the children are expected to read and decode.  The important thing is that they have the skills to decode familiar and unfamiliar words rather than simply learn the words from the booklet.
  • Children’s knowledge of phonics and their ability to decode familiar and unfamiliar words is assessed formally at the end of Year 1.  Children are required to take a phonics reading test.  The test assesses mainly words taught at Phase 4 of the Letters and Sounds programme.
  • A sample Year 1 Phonics Test is available here.  The words written next to an ‘alien’ picture indicate pseudo or ‘made up’ words.  They are not real words but the children are expected to have a god to reading them as if they were real words.  It is their ability to segment and blend letters and sounds in this test that is important.
  • The Phonics Screening Test will take place during the week beginning 11th June 2018.
