Overview of the Year (2017 – 2018)
The following information was shared by the class teacher at the Parents’ Welcome / Information evening at the beginning of the year.

General Communication
- please write messages in the Home-School Message book, making sure that your child knows to give it to a member of staff (we do not check every child’s messages book on a daily basis)
- please ask for a brief conversation after school if needed
- please ask for an appointment if you need raise concerns or discuss something in some detail

Class Visits : Our class visits will include:
- Styal – River Study
- The People’s Museum, Manchester
- Tatton Park, Viking’s Day
Guided Reading
- All children in class will take part in a guided reading each week for 20-25 minutes.
- Children are heard read once a week in addition to guided reading
- Some children with greater need are heard read two or three times per week
PE Lessons
- PE lessons will take place on Mondays and Fridays
- Please make sure that your child’s PE kit is in school every day and taken home on Fridays for washing/returning on Mondays
- Please make that your child’s PE kit is clearly labelled with their name
Homework
- Homework will include a 30-minute English and a 30-minute Mathematics task
- Tasks and project work in other subjects will be set from time to time
- Homework will be set on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday
- Reading on a regular basis every week (reading and library books)
- Spellings once week (Friday for Friday) to be practised daily
- Please expect quality work and good presentation
Homework Advice
- Try to have a regular routine, perhaps a set day and time each week to complete homework
- Try not leave completion of homework until the last day
- Complete work in small stages
- Revise spelling daily – read, writing, apply
- Provide a quiet or purposeful space
- Give help and support as needed; it is a good opportunity to share work with your child
Helping your child
- review and monitor targets from their Summer report
- encourage them to continue to read for pleasure (library books, purchased books, etc.)
- please support completion of their homework
- practise multiplication tables (up to 12 x 12)
- practise spellings, particularly the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 Spelling lists
Other Arrangements
- Mrs Petrie will teach Year 5 when Miss Jackson takes her Planning, Preparation and Assessment time.
