Swimming Programme

A swimming risk assessment for COVID-19 can be found here.

The National Curriculum for Physical Education (Swimming) states that all schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.  In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and
    breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

The school starts swimming lessons for pupils when they are in Year 3.  They start in the February of Year 3 and continue until the following February, when they are in Year 4.  By the end of the swimming programme, we aim for

  • all of our pupils to be able to swim 25 metres (NC requirement);
  • at least half of the pupils to be able to swim 50 metres (not a NC requirement);
  • all of our pupils to be able to use a range of swimming strokes (NC requirement);
  • all of our pupils to be able to perform a safe self-rescue (NC requirement).

Swimming Outcomes

The vast majority of our pupils achieve the required standard in swimming by the end of Year 4.  We therefore publish these ahead of the statutory reporting period which is at the end of Year 6.  The outcomes may be updated given that children who do not reach the required standard in swimming continue their lessons when they are in Year 5 and Year 6 to ensure that they complete the National Curriculum swimming programme.
